It is said that Lake Como has captivated and inspired many a scholar… a dreamer, a poet, a composer and even a magistrate of Ancient Rome. Aristocrats, royalty, entertainers, thespians, actors, maestros, athletes, and jet setters have flocked here too as part of their “grand-tours” and getaways. One look at the lake reflecting those wavelengths of a deep blue sky, shores flecked with classic stone villas and spectacular gardens with all manner of boats and ferries gliding by, and you too will be hooked.

There are several luxurious options along the shores of Lake Como, but none more welcoming, vital, and glamorous than Grand Hotel Tremezzo. This 5-star luxury hotel appeals to many types of travelers. Those seeking a quiet stay wrapped in luxury will enjoy the exclusive T Spa which is located a few steps from the hotel in the elegantly restored 18th century Villa Emilia. There are also gardens to be explored throughout the property and opportunities to go next door and wander the botanic gardens of the Villa Carlotta – once a prestigious private home, and now a museum. There is just something unexplainabley special when it comes to the travel experience with Grand Hotel Tremezzo!

Dine At La Terrazza

Are you a foodie? Grand Hotel Tremezzo has endless (and delicious!) options for you. The La Terrazza Restaurant is a series of grand rooms with incredible views. From the cheery terrazza (patio) you’ll have a panoramic look at Lake Como with views across the lake to the dreamy town of Bellagio. You’ will be feasting on breakfast here each morning from their sumptuous buffet, but at night it is transformed into a romantic space replete with stars, candlelight, a slight breeze off the lake, and the twinkling lights of Bellagio. La Terrazza has inspired dishes and famous recipes from the legacy of Master Italian Chef Maestro Gualtiero Marchesi in the expert hands of chef Osvaldo Presazzi. Don’t miss the Riso Oro e Zafferano the creamy golden-orange rice dish with saffron and a square of pure gold floating in the center. Tip: The Marchesi Degustation menu, with wine pairings suggested by your sommelier, is a savvy way to try the menu offerings with the perfect Italian wine.

For Wine Lovers: L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar

Enophile much? L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar is your nirvana with more than 1,300 bottles of wine. Take a walk over to the restaurant, and then “a journey through the best vineyards of Italy accompanied by our expert sommelier and enologist” as GHT likes to say. The décor feels clubby in the best way, but also as if you are in one of Italy’s wine cellars with wood and stone surrounding comfortable seating and tables. The Wine Bar boasts Lake Como views and is a magical place to taste some of the 350 Italian regional wines. If you want romance, there are tables on the veranda that overlook the lake, or choose the option in the intimate garden.

A selection of “I Taglieri” an assortment of Italian cheeses, jams, honey and raisin bread, or one with Italian cold cuts, toasted bread, and extra virgin olive oil might be just the thing to go with your wine tasting. They have Antipasti, Pasta, Risoti, Carne & Pesce (meat and fish) dishes and also Fondue with beef tenderloin cooked in hot oil at table or catch of the day you cook in hot broth (fondu) but certainly no cheese fondue. There are vegetable options as well. The Grand Tremezzo Hotel and the chefs are so concerned with your well-being that each menu item has several numbers next to the description telling if they include gluten, or peanuts, or are made with shellfish, include egg, or are vegan etc. The staff here is professional and extremely honest. When asked about the size of the portions so we could judge how much we wanted to order, our waiter said in his best English and completely dead-pan, “This is not big food. This is food you can go back to your room and make love to.” I skipped dessert.

Grand Design

Do you love historic buildings and design? Grand Hotel Tremezzo was built as an “Art Nouveau palace” hotel in the village of Tremezzo along the Lake Como shore with a backdrop of the Grigne Mountains. The entrance to The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a feast of visual beauty. You can walk up the stair from the portico, and at each landing, the view of the lake changes. Arriving at the top, you step into the lobby and are immediately taken away to another century by the brocade drapes pooling on the inlaid stone floor, framing more spectacular views of the lake. Sitting areas with red and gold velvet chairs and couchettes form conversation islands in the large space and fresh flowers are everywhere.

The rooms are magnificent. The Lake View Prestige Rooms have a small terrace balcony with commanding lake views, large baths swathed in marble, soft colored Como silks in the rooms, and comfy beds to dream on. Rooms with views to the magnificent garden are equally inspirational.

Private Villa Sola Cabiati

As the story goes, a noble Lombardy family builds a noble house. In the 16th century, the Villa Sola Cabiati was built along the shore of Lake Como. In the 18th century the Duke of Serbelloni decided to take this villa and create a masterpiece for the family’s grand summer home. Located close to Grand Hotel Tremezzo the Villa Sola Cabiati is offered through the Grand Hotel Tremezzo for weddings and special events. This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a magical experience enveloped in aristocratic elegance, and a chance to step back into a gracious time.

Getting There

You can arrive by train to Milan and arrange a car service via the hotel’s concierge. The ride takes about an hour. Don’t attempt to drive. The tiny streets and many blind curves are best left to the locals and the professional drivers.
