Renowned Argentinian chef Francis Mallmann, celebrated globally for his signature live-fire cooking techniques, is set to make his mark in New York City this spring. His latest venture will be housed within Faena New York, an extension of the luxury hotel brand debuting near Manhattan’s High Line at 500 West 18th Street. The building, designed by the acclaimed Bjarke Ingels Group, is poised to blend cutting-edge architecture with the hotel’s storied Argentinian flair.

Mallmann’s partnership with the Faena brand is far from new. Alan Faena, the mastermind behind the hotel group, launched the concept in Buenos Aires in 2000 before expanding to Miami a decade later. In Miami, Mallmann’s Los Fuegos is a staple of the Faena Hotel, offering a fiery dining experience surrounded by a bold interior featuring deep reds and leopard prints. The dramatic decor even nods to the creative influence of “Moulin Rouge” director Baz Luhrmann.

While the New York restaurant’s name remains under wraps, it promises to deliver a distinctive identity separate from Los Fuegos. Nevertheless, it will retain the chef’s hallmark style of open-flame cooking and use of massive cast-iron skillets, as reported by The New York Times. Those familiar with Mallmann’s Miami outpost can expect a high-end dining experience but with a more lively atmosphere.

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Patagonia, Mallmann’s culinary career began with a foundation in French cuisine, earning him early acclaim. Eventually, he returned to his roots, refining and championing the art of live-fire cooking. This shift cemented his reputation as South America’s most celebrated chef and allowed him to expand his influence across continents, with restaurants from Miami to Provence, France. Despite his global reach, Patagonia remains his personal and professional anchor.

Mallmann’s association with luxury extends beyond his culinary ventures. After appearing on Chef’s Table, he attracted high-profile guests to his private island retreat in Patagonia, where stays have been reported to cost upwards of $60,000 for five nights. This penchant for opulence aligns seamlessly with the Faena brand, where even Miami’s entry-level rooms start at over $1,000 per night. Faena New York is expected to follow suit, joining the ranks of Manhattan’s ultra-luxe hospitality destinations, such as the Aman Hotel in Midtown and the Manner Hotel in Soho.

With its location just steps away from a Google campus and nestled in the heart of New York’s vibrant Meatpacking District, Mallmann’s new venture is set to draw locals and tourists eager to experience his culinary artistry. Whether it matches the grandeur of its Miami counterpart or strikes a unique chord in the city’s bustling food scene, one thing is certain: Francis Mallmann’s fire-driven cuisine is about to ignite New York spectacularly.
