It seems like forever since the iconic Virgin Megastore left Times Square in 2009, leaving New York City vacant of anything and everything Virgin. However, those days are behind us now that Virgin Hotels New York City has officially broken ground, and is due to join the Virgin Hotels family in 2018. Together with the Lam Group, Virgin Hotels New York City will be a monumental project, located in the NOMAD neighborhood at 1227 Broadway, between 29th and 30th Streets. It’s still a few years away, but this property will serve as the brand’s flagship hotel, and is scheduled to deliver a one-of-a-kind hotel experience in one of Virgin’s favorite destinations.

“New York City isn’t just a destination for the Virgin airlines, but a place where some of the most successful Virgin brands have been incubate, where we’ve stunned crowds with stunts and where some of our most devoted fans live,” said Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group. “It’s a very special city to the Virgin brand, and I’m elated that Virgin Hotels will soon call it home.”

The Time Capsule

In typical Sir Richard Branson stylized fashion, he is commemorating this groundbreaking with Raul Leal, who is CEO of Virgin Hotels, by burying a Virgin time capsule below the new hotel. The chest will include mementos from Virgin company moments in New York, such as Virgin Cola can, Wham Glam Thank You Ma’am CD from the Times Square Virgin Megastore, Virgin Atlantic onboard salt and pepper shakers, Virgin Hotels key cards, Virgin America headphones and JFK boarding pass, photos and more.

The hotel is slated to open in 2018, and will include 463 rooms, plus multiple concept suites. Additional amenities will include a rooftop pool, as well as multiple dining outlets, including The Commons Club and a rooftop bar. The first and second floors will be occupied with high end shopping, while Virgin Hotels will populate the floors above. Virgin Hotels is also aiming to achieve LEED certification.
