Perched high overlooking the scenic North Saskatchewan River, Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has stood as an icon of luxury, history, and refined elegance in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, since 1915. Known as the “Château on the River,” this grand hotel exquisitely marries Edwardian architecture with modern luxury, making it a destination beloved by both visitors and locals alike. From its storied past to its regal suites, from its impeccable service to its sophisticated lounge, this recently renovated hotel is our first (and perhaps only) choice when visiting Alberta’s capital.

A Storied History

Named in honor of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, Hotel Macdonald opened its doors in 1915 as part of the Canadian Northern Railway’s line of grand hotels. It was designed by the renowned architectural firm Ross and Macdonald, who crafted its château-style architecture with sweeping turrets, grand façades, and rich Edwardian detailing. Over the years, the hotel has hosted countless royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries ranging from Mick Jagger to Queen Elizabeth II, cementing its reputation as a place of high society and sophistication.

Overcoming challenges during the Great Depression, the hotel was facing demolition in the 1980s before then-Edmonton mayor Terry Cavanagh intervened and saved the beloved landmark (Cavanaugh is immortalized at the hotel for his generosity). Fairmont Hotel Macdonald was restored in 1991 to its former glory, with a significant renovation that preserved its historic charm while modernizing it for a new era. Today, it’s recognized as a heritage site and a beloved Edmonton landmark, celebrated for its architectural beauty and historic significance, and just underwent a spectacular room renovation.

Impeccable Amenities

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with timeless grandeur, from the sweeping lobby staircase to the crystal chandeliers that light up the elegant interiors. Fairmont Hotel Macdonald prides itself on delivering world-class service and amenities that enhance the guest experience, seamlessly combining tradition with contemporary luxury. A curated selection of artwork and historical artifacts adorns the hallways, reminding guests of the hotel’s rich cultural heritage and reinforcing its constant place as a beacon of luxury to Edmontonians for a century.

The hotel is also pet-friendly, allowing guests to bring their furry friends along and even offering pet-specific amenities and treats as well as a resident canine ambassador (an adorable yellow lab named Hendricks that Luxe Getaways is quite fond of).

Dining

Guests can choose from two acclaimed dining options, each offering its unique ambiance and flavors. Confederation Lounge is a generational local landmark in itself, blending casual sophistication with historic charm. With its wood-paneled interiors and elegant interior, the lounge is a refined yet relaxed setting for both guests and locals (especially in warmer months when one can sit on the patio and take in views of the lush river valley.). In addition to exceptionally crafted cocktails and a vast selection of whiskeys (including the largest Dalmore collection available in North America), there are lovely lunch and dinner menus, catering to a variety of tastes and showcasing locally sourced ingredients.

The Harvest Room & Terrace provides a more formal yet inviting dining experience, with an emphasis on farm-to-table flavors that highlight the region’s finest ingredients. Seasonal menus offer a rotating selection of locally sourced produce and sustainably caught seafood alongside Alberta’s signature beef and bison dishes (the beef tenderloin is a staple) and a vast selection of wines. The restaurant’s large windows frame picturesque views of the river valley, adding to the serene and elegant dining atmosphere. The Harvest Room is especially popular for breakfast and brunch, where guests can enjoy hearty, locally inspired meals to start the day.

The hotel also offers private dining for those seeking an intimate and personalized culinary experience. Exclusive services, seasonal menus, and specialty events make dining at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald an unforgettable part of the stay. During our stay, we enjoyed one of the hotel’s very reasonably priced (CAD 139 per person, including wine pairing) and exceptionally well-curated “long table” wine dinners on the terrace and were impressed with its thoughtful curation and flawless execution of the large-scale event.

Relaxation and Wellness

The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald’s dedication to wellness is evident in its spa and fitness offerings. The full-service spa provides a tranquil escape with a selection of massages, including aromatherapy, deep-tissue, and hot stone, tailored to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. Guests can indulge in signature treatments that incorporate locally inspired ingredients, enhancing the sense of connection to Edmonton’s natural landscape.
