LuxeGetaways Magazine – Spring 2017 | I first visited Savannah a few years ago as part of a Southern authors literary road trip. We arrived late in the afternoon and spent the evening wandering around the unfamiliar streets, eating at a sceney restaurant with live, local music before returning to our lodging for the night. The next morning, we ventured into the easily walk-able city with our knowledgeable guide. Stops along the brick paved streets included author Flannery O’Conner’s home in the historic district, the freemason lodge on the waterfront, and, of course, a graveyard tour just before dusk. The next morning we departed for our next destination, with only about a 24-hour visit to Savannah under my belt. Obviously I wished I had more time, but trust me, a shortage of time does not mean you need to miss any of the Savannah highlights! Thanks to one of my good friends and Savannah local, we have compiled the best sights and bites for you to enjoy during your 24-hour stop in the iconic southern city of Savannah, Georgia.
Spend your arrival lunch-hour at the historic, 1933 establishment Crystal Beer Parlor before hopping aboard a trolley or pedicab tour to discover the unique history behind the establishment and growth of the city of Savannah. You are sure to find something to enjoy for lunch, but if you need some direction, the hamburgers are legendary in this area!
Dedicate your late afternoon to Broughton Street for some serious shopping and some pre-dinner dessert at Leopold’s Ice Cream, even if the line is halfway down the street. They will have all your favorite flavors, but be sure to give their seasonal flavors, like Guinness ice cream, a try. And do not miss the movie posters from decades of box office hits by owner and producer Stratton Leopold.
Now that you have spent your day walking through that infamous southern humidity, you will probably want to venture back to your hotel to freshen up before heading out to see Savannah after dark. Since dinner reservations are a necessity in Savannah, do not forget to make them early. Begin your evening with a stroll down River Street towards the Bohemian Hotel to visit their rooftop lounge known for its handcrafted cocktails, live entertainment and stunning Savannah views. For your one chance at a Savannah dinner, The Grey will not disappoint. Built in a 1938 art deco Greyhound Bus Terminal, The Grey mixes the history, flavors and hospitality of Savannah with the refined, unique style of Chef Mashama Bailey to provide a unique localized experience. The seasonal menu rotates frequently offering guests and locals alike a truly one-of-a-kind tasting experience. To get the best restaurant experience, ask to sit at the center bar where the full menu is available along with a complete view of the restaurant goings-on. Finish off your perfect day with a late night stop at LuLu’s Chocolate Bar and enjoy some sweet, heavenly dessert dreams (if you are feeling adventurous, try the Rapture Sundae).
After a restful night’s sleep, visit the funky, retro-vibed Back in the Day Bakery for a cappuccino and a snack (or their old fashioned vanilla cupcake if you’re in the mood for something truly delectable, or the scones and lavender cookies are other favorites). Sit at one of the window tables or snag one of the available long tables if you’re planning to meet friends. On your way out of town, bid a final farewell to Savannah with a walk around the fountain in Forsyth Park. Built in 1858, the fountain serves as the city’s focal point during the famous St. Patrick’s Day festivities, including the ceremonial dyeing of the fountain’s water to shamrock green. Perhaps this final Savannah icon will work it’s magic and entice you to come back for more than a quick visit. Who knows, perhaps after only 24-hours you too will have “Ya’ll” worked into your vocabulary!
