Six stunningly beautiful properties around the world today are the work of Southworth Development. Based in Newton, Massachusetts and led by founder and CEO David Southworth, the company specializes in the development and operation of residential resort and hospitality-branded real estate communities both domestically and abroad. Despite the inherent boom and bust cycles of the golf real estate business, Southworth has continued to thrive – much in part to Mr. Southworth’s long-term approach to creating unique environments that are life affirming while offering an excellent value to its residents.
His philosophy is simple – identify incredible sites, and then create world-class communities. The company’s properties continue to flourish as it puts a heavy emphasis on the small details – exceptional customer service, goodwill and sustainable building. Southworth believes in celebrating life, and in creating opportunities for club members, community residents and resort guests to do the same.
Since its founding in 1991, Southworth Development has gone on to grow a spectacular $2 billion portfolio. With each development being dynamically different, here is a closer look at each of them.
The Abaco Club on Winding Bay
The most recent addition to Southworth’s portfolio is The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, a private, international sporting club located on the Bahamian island of Great Abaco. Situated on more than 500 acres, The Abaco Club offers a world of relaxation and five-star resort-style amenities for homeowners and visitors to enjoy – with a 2.5-mile private beach; a top-rated golf course; spectacular water, leisure and sporting activities; fine dining featuring fresh local fare; and last, but not least, world-class fishing. The homes at The Abaco Club range from grand oceanfront estate homes to luxurious oceanview cottages and cozy Bahamian cabanas. Together, these make The Abaco Club one of the most luxurious resort communities on earth.
The Club’s unique “tropical links” golf course has been consistently ranked as one of the top courses in the Caribbean and Mexico. Designed by British course architects Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie, the picturesque course is set against the sea with rugged rocks, sloping greens and lush flora throughout – and is often frequented by 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain and Abaco resident, Darren Clarke.
Creighton Farms
A luxury gated community of extraordinary custom homes in the rolling horse country just west of Washington, D.C., Creighton Farms’ residents and club members enjoy a wide range of resort-style amenities, including an award-winning golf course, swimming, tennis, fine dining, and one of America’s most beautiful clubhouses. This is a true community, where a spirit of comradery brings friends and families closer together every day, and makes each new day all the more meaningful.
The crown jewel at Creighton Farms is the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Created by the greatest golfer ever to play the game, the course challenges players to think strategically as they traverse the property’s rolling, horse-country terrain. Course conditions are uniformly excellent year-round and there is a full slate of club events, as well as a superb practice facility.
Meredith Bay
Unlike most of Southworth’s properties, Meredith Bay does not have a golf course, but what it lacks in golf, it makes up in natural beauty. Nestled on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee (New England’s largest lake), the gated community at Meredith Bay invites people to “Live where the world comes to play” in beautiful Adirondack and Craftsman-style homes, luxurious lakefront Townhomes and no-maintenance lakeview Condominiums.
Social and recreational activities are at the heart of community life at Meredith Bay where families reconnect, friendships are formed, and cherished memories made. The community’s exceptional amenities include a fitness center, swimming pool, tennis courts, walking trails, maple sugar hut, and lakeside picnic area with swim platform. Residents also have access to a nearby marina and beach club.
Renaissance
Situated on Boston’s historic North Shore, the private Renaissance golf club offers members a chance to play on a course that embodies golf’s century-old, classic traditions at every turn. In addition to offering members the best golf course in the region, it offers a magnificent American Shingle-style clubhouse with overnight club rooms and an elegant Grand Ballroom, extensive golf practice area, tennis, fitness, and pool facilities, including a children’s play area and colorful gourmet food truck.
Dubbed a “modern classic,” the first-ever 18-hole Brian Silva Signature Course at Renaissance was one of three national finalists for the NGCOA “Course of the Year” in 2014—and with good reason. Every hole offers up a series of strategic challenges that players of all skill levels enjoy. It is a course renowned for its classic design features, straight from golf’s Golden Age of Architecture — and for being a ton of fun to play.
The Village at Machrihanish Dunes
The Village at Machrihanish Dunes is a magical seaside resort located in Argyll on Scotland’s west coast that offers two fully restored historic hotels, seaside cottages for rent and purchase, two traditional Scottish pubs, and two acclaimed restaurants. It all combines to give resort guests and cottage owners the warmest of Scottish welcomes and the kind of unforgettable experiences that can only be found there.
One of its highlights is Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, a GB&I-Top-100 links golf course set hard against the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,082 yard, 18-hole layout, designed by architect David McLay Kidd, was ecologically built to keep as much of the area’s natural beauty as possible. In fact, it is the only course ever created on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the United Kingdom. To build in such an environmentally sensitive area, only seven of the parcel’s 259 acres were disturbed, namely to build tees and greens. Mach Dunes offers golfers the chance to experience golf the way it began – to create and craft golf shots just as the men of Scotland did centuries ago.
Willowbend
As one of Southworth’s most prestigious properties, Willowbend is an innovative private club community with facilities and a club membership unlike any other club in the region. Located just 90 minutes from Boston in an idyllic Cape Cod location, Willowbend homeowners choose from elegant homes overlooking Shoestring Bay and the area’s working cranberry bogs or new townhomes and villas.
Health and rejuvenation are at the heart of the Willowbend lifestyle, and the club has extraordinary fitness and wellness facilities for helping residents and club members maintain a healthy lifestyle. A mecca of golf and tennis – including Cape Cod’s only stadium tennis court and a golf course consisting of 27 holes on three nines – Willowbend has hosted celebrities and famous athletes from all over the world – including sports legends Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Rory McIlroy; and actors Mark Wahlberg and Samuel L. Jackson.
