On a private island along the Saône River, just ten minutes from central Lyon, Les Suites de l’Île Barbe offers an intimate five-star retreat within the remains of one of France’s oldest monastic sites. Combining centuries of architectural heritage with contemporary hospitality, the property features individually designed accommodations, private gardens, and historic spaces available for exclusive events. A significant expansion scheduled for January 2027 will add suites and a gastronomic restaurant led by French chef Vivien Rouleaud, marking a new chapter for this remarkable Lyon address.

Centuries of History Along the Saône

The history of Île Barbe stretches back to the earliest centuries of Christianity in Western Europe, with local tradition tracing its first Christian settlement to the third century. Municipal archives date the region’s first monastic establishment to the fifth century, making the island one of the oldest monastic sites in Gaul. During the Middle Ages, its northern section developed into an extensive religious complex comprising an abbey church, cloister, chapter house, and monks’ refectory.

The abbey was secularized in 1551, and its buildings were subsequently divided, with much of the principal church dismantled following the French Revolution. Surviving architectural elements from the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries remain visible across the island, including structures protected as historic monuments. Les Suites de l’Île Barbe occupies portions of the former Saint-Martin-Saint-Loup abbey church, preserving a rare connection to the island’s medieval past.

The same family has owned the property since 1891, with successive generations maintaining its historic character. Among its architectural treasures are an ancient crypt, the former chapter house where monks once gathered, and a chapel restored by the owning family. Interior architect Jorge Grasso has renovated the accommodations, incorporating contemporary materials and five-star amenities while respecting the original architectural volumes.

An Intimate Collection of Five-Star Suites

Currently offering five rooms and suites for up to 17 guests, Les Suites de l’île Barbe offers an alternative to Lyon’s larger luxury hotels. The accommodations balance generous living spaces with the character of their historic surroundings, making the property equally suited to romantic escapes, extended stays, and private gatherings. Each accommodation offers its own interpretation of the estate’s architectural heritage.

The Loft is the property’s most expansive accommodation, encompassing 150 square meters, including a 100-square-meter living room. Situated above the former chapter house, it features two bedrooms and accommodates up to six guests. Its substantial proportions make it particularly appealing for families or groups seeking a private residential experience.

The 90-square-meter Family Suite includes two bedrooms, a living room, and a fully equipped kitchen, accommodating four guests. The 40-square-meter Garden-Level Suite offers direct access to the grounds and sleeps three, while the two River View Rooms each measure 32 square meters and accommodate two guests. The latter enjoy views of both the Saône and the surrounding parkland.

Guests can arrange in-room breakfast, private yoga or Pilates sessions, guided visits of Lyon, and excursions along the river by boat or kayak, subject to availability. These personalized experiences complement the property’s residential atmosphere and provide opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape. With the city center just ten minutes away, the estate offers convenient access to Lyon’s cultural and culinary attractions.

Private Gardens and Exclusive Events

Beyond the accommodations, a private 3,000-square-meter park surrounds the historic buildings, featuring century-old trees, river views, and a private landing on the Saône. The landscaped grounds create an unusually secluded setting, yet remain within reach of central Lyon. Together with the abbey’s surviving architecture, they form an integral part of the guest experience.

The estate also accommodates private celebrations, corporate retreats, meetings, and family gatherings, with individual spaces or the entire property available for exclusive use. Its 100-square-meter Le Chapitre reception room provides an additional event setting, while the gardens and suites offer flexible options for different occasions. The historic interiors, crypt, gardens, and riverfront surroundings also make the property available for photography and film productions, subject to approval and availability.

A New Gastronomic Destination Arriving in 2027

The next chapter for Les Suites de l’Île Barbe will unfold in January 2027 with the integration of the neighboring Auberge de l’Île, a former Michelin-starred restaurant. After renovations, the expansion will increase the estate’s total inventory to eleven rooms and suites, adding accommodations within the historic setting. The new rooms are scheduled to debut in January, with a gastronomic restaurant opening in the weeks that follow.

The timing coincides with Sirha Lyon, the international hospitality and food-service exhibition taking place January 21–25, 2027. The event will bring hospitality professionals and culinary leaders to Lyon as the estate prepares to unveil its expanded offering. With the addition of a dedicated fine-dining experience, Les Suites de l’Île Barbe will bring accommodations, heritage, private events, and gastronomy together within a single destination.

The forthcoming restaurant will be helmed by chef Vivien Rouleaud, whose career includes experience at several distinguished French culinary institutions. A winner of the 2018 French final of the International Pierre Taittinger Culinary Prize, Rouleaud has worked at Le Chabichou in Courchevel and Maison Pic in Valence. He subsequently led the kitchens at Chez Jeannette, located within the Commanderie de Peyrassol wine estate in Provence.

The restaurant’s culinary direction will be announced closer to opening, and the estate is also planning an outdoor summer dining concept for spring 2027. The seasonal addition will extend the gastronomic experience into the property’s grounds, taking advantage of its gardens and riverside location. Together, the two dining concepts will introduce a significant new dimension to the estate’s hospitality offering.

A New Chapter for Luxury Hospitality in Lyon

With its preserved monastic architecture, intimate accommodations, and expansive private grounds, Les Suites de l’Île Barbe presents a distinctive way to experience Lyon. The forthcoming expansion builds on the property’s existing identity, adding accommodations and a dedicated culinary program while maintaining its connection to the island’s extraordinary history. For travelers seeking a private retreat within easy reach of one of France’s great gastronomic cities, the estate offers a compelling combination of heritage, space, and contemporary hospitality.

The existing accommodations and event spaces are currently available for reservations, while the expanded suites and gastronomic restaurant are scheduled to open in early 2027. We will announce further details about the culinary offering ahead of the launch.
